Lotus Assists in the July Flooding 2018 in Laos
On July 18th 2018, high levels of monsoonal rains caused the banks of the Xepian-Xe Nam Noy dam to collapse and the subsequent roof-level flood waters submerged and washed away several nearby villages, leaving 6,600 people homeless. As Lotus has been active in Laos since 2008, we felt that it was vital to support the local relief efforts, especially those directed at assisting women and children affected by this disaster.
Lotus Project Officer, Ms La Phetsavanh Somsivilay, assisted three Lotus students Ms Baysy, Onevisa and Khamwand, with the purchase of goods and supplies from the local market in Savannakhet. With many people expected to be displaced and living in makeshift tents for the coming months, basic essential items were purchased and this included bottled water, canned fish, noodles, soap and shampoo.
The good were packed and distributed by students from the University of Savannakhet in collaboration with Lotus students.
